Many are turning to reloading their own ammunition as a way to reduce the cost and even improve on the accuracy and performance of factory loaded shells. Using reloaded ammunition can save a ton of money allowing a shooter to fire many more shells than they would of been able had they bought boxed ammunition

Reloading your own ammunition also allows you to customize the load and you can tailor the bullets performance and velocity by changing the load. Target shooters and hunters alike like to try different loads to see which shell load performs better for what they are trying to achieve. Of course, they also like throw in a "hot load" every now and then just for fun. Any shooter knows that a "hot load" has a few more grains of powder than your standard load and packs a real punch especially to a person who is target shooting and not expecting it.

The amount of powder grains used in the shell load will directly effect the recoil of rifles or handguns. This can come in really handy in a target shooting contest or even for hunting for specific game. Many reloaders will try numerous combinations and levels of powder to get just the right type of round they are looking for.

The most basic piece of reloading equipment used for hand loading is the press. As odd as it sounds, reloading presses are most often categorized by the letter of the alphabet the press actually resembles. Either an O, C or H category. The most commonly used presses today are the Lee press and the Mec reloader.

Next, you need reloading dies which are typically sold in sets. The dies are used to expand the casing mouth so that the bullet will press smoothly into the shell. The dies work together with a shellholder which is what holds the case in place as it is either being pressed or extracted from the case. Shellholders are specialized for the specific style of cartridge being reloaded. Lyman reloading dies and Redding Dies are the two most popular brands of dies in use today.

An extremely important part of the process is to have a precision scale for weighing out the powder. Because of the explosive power of the powder, it's important that the amounts are weighed down to the grain since if a shell casing is over loaded with to much powder, it can explode in the breach causing catastrophic failure of the weapon as well as loss of limbs or even life.

reloading ammuntionAs with anything, mistakes do happen. With reloading, it's easy to correct those mistakes with a bullet puller. It allows you to extract the bullet from the shell so that it can be redone. This can save you quite a bit when you are first learning to reload and will make more mistakes.

It's important that you get fully informed before attempting to reload your own ammo. If you don't want to take formal classes the best way is to buy some reloading DVDs and books and watch them a few times. It's good to have books so you can refer to them as you are actually reloading.
